Job Summary
A Trussed Roof Carpenter specializes in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of roof trusses-structural frameworks that support roofing systems. The role involves interpreting design drawings, preparing and cutting timber, assembling truss components, installing them safely on-site, and ensuring that the roof structure is secure, aligned, and built to specification.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Planning and Preparation
- Study and interpret architectural and structural drawings for trussed roofing.
- Identify and select appropriate materials (timber, engineered wood, connectors).
- Measure, mark, and cut timber components accurately according to design.
- Lay out and prepare workstations for truss assembly.
Fabrication of Trusses
- Assemble roof trusses (e.g., king post, queen post, fink, Howe, or scissor trusses) on the ground.
- Use metal connector plates, bolts, or nails to secure joints.
- Check alignment, squareness, and dimensions during assembly.
- Apply protective treatments to timber if required (anti-termite or weatherproofing).
Installation of Trussed Roofs
- Erect and position trusses onto building structures using manual lifting or cranes.
- Secure trusses to wall plates and ensure proper spacing and alignment.
- Install permanent bracing, purlins, and binders for structural stability.
- Fit additional roofing components such as fascia boards, battens, and ceiling joists.
Finishing and Inspection
- Conduct visual and level checks for alignment and plumbness.
- Repair or replace any defective parts or joints.
- Coordinate with roofers for sheeting or tile installation.
- Comply with building codes and quality standards.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong understanding of roof truss design and load distribution.
- Proficient in woodworking, measuring, and joint-making.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Skilled in the use of carpentry tools (saws, levels, nail guns, drills, etc.).
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and fall protection systems.
Tools and Equipment Used
- Circular saws, handsaws, and power drills
- Tape measure, spirit level, and framing square
- Hammers, nail guns, and clamps
- Ladders, scaffolding, and harnesses
- Metal connector plates, bolts, and brackets
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Certificate or diploma in Carpentry / Building Construction (or equivalent trade qualification).
- Experience: 2-5 years in roof carpentry or truss installation preferred.
- Certifications: Safety training (e.g., Working at Heights, Basic Rigging, or OSHA compliance) is an asset.
Work Conditions
- Work is primarily performed outdoors on construction sites.
- Requires working at heights and in varying weather conditions.
- Involves lifting, climbing, and balancing.
