Quantity Surveyor
Location: Basingstoke, Hampshire (office-based with site visits - London & Home Counties)
Salary: Negotiable + excellent benefits
Type: Full-time, permanent
We are recruiting an experienced Quantity Surveyor to work across two long-established, specialist contracting businesses who are the market leader in their field.
This is a key commercial role, responsible for managing all financial and contractual aspects of projects from order placement through to final account, ensuring profitability, strong cash flow, and smooth commercial delivery.
The role is mainly office-based at a Basingstoke, Hampshire location, with site visits as required (approximately 25-30% of the time). Most projects are based in London and the surrounding Home Counties.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Contract & Contract Formation
- Work closely with Estimators to confirm contract values and resolve any pricing discrepancies
- Review, negotiate and agree contract terms including payment terms, bonds and warranties
- Lead handover meetings from Sales/Estimating to the Contracts team
- Identify, manage and control variations and changes (upstream & downstream)
- Attend pre-start and pre-order meetings where required
Commercial & Financial Management
- Prepare and submit applications for payment, including variations and compensation events
- Monitor and forecast project costs, revenue, margin and cash flow
- Support procurement of labour, subcontractors and materials
- Manage subcontract agreements, valuations, payment notices and final accounts
- Lead and contribute to improvements in project costing and commercial processes
- Prepare, manage, negotiate and finalise project accounts
Project & Operational Support
- Set up and maintain project trackers and reporting systems
- Provide accurate, timely financial and commercial reporting
- Liaise with site and operational teams to maintain cost control
- Attend site to assess potential issues and coordinate solutions
Client & Internal Relationships
- Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with clients
- Support tendering and complex pricing exercises when required
- Contribute towards annual turnover and commercial targets
- Offer mentoring and support to colleagues as appropriate
About You
You will ideally have:
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in a Quantity Surveying or commercial role
- Proven experience managing the commercial performance of construction projects
- Experience working for a specialist or subcontracting business (highly advantageous)
- Strong knowledge of contracts, variations and final account procedures
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
- A proactive, dynamic and commercially focused approach
- Strong organisational and communication skills
Qualifications
- A relevant construction, commercial or Quantity Surveying degree would be advantageous but not essential.
- GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent)
- Experience mentoring or managing others is beneficial
