Job description

Health and Safety Consultant

About Our Client

Our client is not a typical health and safety consultancy, and they are not looking for a typical consultant.

They help organisations create lasting behavioural change, not just compliance. Their consultants build strong client relationships, understand how work is really done and make safety practical, meaningful and sustainable.

The role is varied and hands-on. You may be on a construction site one day and presenting to senior leaders the next. Success requires adaptability, sound judgement and the ability to tailor your approach to different environments.

They are a small, ambitious and values-led team committed to delivering high-quality support. You will be backed by experienced colleagues while being trusted to take ownership, use your initiative and proactively solve problems.

About the Role

Our client is looking for a Health and Safety Consultant who can combine technical competence with strong communication, professional judgement and genuine curiosity. This role would suit someone who enjoys variety, can work confidently with different types of clients, and wants to be part of a consultancy that does things properly.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of consultancy work, including:

  • Undertaking health and safety legal compliance audits and inspections, including the development of tailored legal registers and prioritised action plans.
  • Completing site-specific risk assessments, including hazardous substances, manual handling and display screen equipment assessments.
  • Supporting clients with the development and implementation of stand-alone or integrated management systems.
  • Auditing client facilities, activities and processes against legislation, industry best practice and corporate management system requirements.
  • Providing practical advice to clients and internal management on technical matters, emerging trends and commercial opportunities.
  • Liaising with regulators, inspectorates and other relevant organisations on behalf of clients where required.
  • Undertaking accident and incident investigations, including complex or sensitive matters.
  • Producing clear, concise and technically accurate reports, action plans and client documentation.
  • Providing on-site support, including acting as an interim Health and Safety Consultant or Manager where required.
  • Designing and delivering training, seminars and facilitated workshops.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior members of the team, including reviewing technical work where appropriate.

The role will involve travel throughout the UK, including occasional overnight stays, depending on client and project requirements. A valid passport or photo ID will be required for air travel.

Who They're Looking For:

  • Takes ownership of their work and can manage their own workload without needing constant direction.
  • Communicates clearly and confidently with clients, colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Can adapt their style to suit different clients, sectors and situations.
  • Uses sound technical judgement and logical problem-solving when faced with new or complex challenges.
  • Writes clear, accurate and professional reports, and can review work produced by others.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, integrity and accountability in the way they work.
  • Has strong commercial awareness and understands the importance of delivering value to clients.
  • Is curious, willing to keep learning and committed to their own continuing professional development.
  • Is flexible and able to travel nationwide, including occasional work outside standard office hours where required.

Behavioural Expectations

The successful candidate will demonstrate behaviours aligned with our client's values and professional standards:

  • Teamwork: Collaborates effectively, supports colleagues and contributes to a positive team culture.
  • Leadership: Acts professionally, takes initiative and leads by example.
  • Accountability: Takes ownership of actions, delivers quality work on time and supports their own development.
  • Courage: Speaks up, asks questions and challenges appropriately when needed.
  • Agility: Adapts to changing priorities and client needs with a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • Technical Excellence: Produces accurate, proportionate and technically sound work with attention to detail.

Experience and Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally be able to demonstrate:

  • A clear knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation and practical compliance requirements.
  • The ability to write concise, technical reports and communicate findings clearly.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in a health and safety role, or relevant industry experience such as construction, manufacturing, engineering or environmental health.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Tech IOSH membership or above would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Experience in CDM and fire safety would be advantageous but is not essential.

What Our Client Offers

In return, they offer:

  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
  • One additional gifted day off for your birthday
  • Pension
  • Mileage allowance of 55p per mile

Working Arrangements

The first six months will be office based unless attending a site visit or client appointment. The role will be subject to a three-month probation period.

If you are looking for a role where you can use your technical knowledge, build meaningful client relationships and be part of a growing consultancy with high standards, our client would like to hear from you.
